Magic in this world exists and is a part of life, similar to any other science like Botany or Archaeology. In universe, it's called Auramancy. It is most often used to create enchanted objects. Here's the outline of the rules:
Aurae:
Aurae are natural spirits that embody elements of the world such as fire, water, earth, air, flora, and fauna.
Each Aurum (singular for Aurae) has a distinct personality and affinity based on its element.
While semi-intelligent, they communicate through emotions and simple imagery, not language.
Aurae are not visible to the naked eye, but aura-enchanted goggles can be used to see other aurae.
Effects of nearby Aurae can still be felt without seeing them, e.g. an air aurum could cause a breeze.
Wizards:
Wizards are ordinary beings who have learned the art of capturing and collaborating with Aurae.
They do not have inherent magical powers; their strength is derived from the Aurae they harness.
Wizards use a variety of sonic instruments, like flutes or chimes, producing specific vibrations to attract and control Aurae.
Capturing Aurae:
To capture an Aurum, a wizard must create a resonance with its core frequency using their sonic devices.
Ideally, for ethical wizards, capture is a mutual agreement rather than a forceful act, as Aurae choose to accompany wizards who resonate well with them.
Less ethical wizards can also forcibly bind aurae, which causes them pain.
Binding Aurae:
Wizards bind Aurae into objects called Vessels—these can be anything from a sword to a necklace.
The object takes on characteristics of the bound Aurum, e.g., a flame Aurum might turn a blade perpetually hot.
Aurae can be unbound and changed, but it requires a ritual and ideally the Aurum's consent.
A more skilled wizard can communicate more intricate instructions to the Aura, causing more complicated behavior in a vessel.
Using Magic:
Wizards activate the magic by channeling their intention and sometimes performing specific gestures or incantations.
The magic's strength and effect are determined by the Aurum's power and the wizard's skill in harmonizing with it.
Direct summoning of Aurae for tasks is rare and considered a high art due to the difficulty of maintaining control and the ethical considerations of using Aurae's essence so directly.
Ethics and Limitations:
Overuse of an Aurum can weaken or even destroy it, leading to ethical considerations in the magical community.
There are forbidden practices, like binding multiple Aurae to one Vessel or attempting to merge their essences.
The natural world reacts to the overuse of Aurae, or if pain is caused to an Aurum, sometimes leading to environmental or magical disturbances.
Learning and Legacy:
Wizards typically learn through apprenticeships, as capturing and using Aurae require nuanced understanding and empathy.
Some wizards specialize in certain types of Aurae, leading to diverse magical practices and cultures around the world.
